The “accueil” specifications are based upon vocational descriptions of language competence provided by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the European Council. The CEF distinguishes between receptive (reading, listening) and productive / interactive skills (writing, speaking) at six levels of competence from A1 to C2. The following Can do statement for Speaking at level B1 may serve to illustrate the approach:
All “accueil” examinations include the module “Assessment of level”. It aims at determining whether candidates have reached the level of general language competence required for their job function (Waiter / Waitress, Assistant Receptionist: A2; Receptionist, Tourism Staff: B1; Middle Manager: B2). This assessment can adopt different forms:
- computer test which can establish the level of general language competence according to the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages”: CAT (Computer Adaptive Test, e.g. BULATS) or MONDIALE Placement
- paper test which can establish the level of general language competence according to the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages”
- certificate of general language competence at the required level issued within three years previous to the “accueil” examination
- bilateral agreement on level assessment between “accueil Language Centre” and individual Test Centre.
